A speech delay occurs when a child's language or speech does not develop at the expected rate for their age. A typical 12- to the 18-month-old child should be able to say 2-3 words and have a vocabulary of 4-6 words. They should have a vocabulary of up to 50 words and be able to say 2-3-word phrases by the age of two. It is important to remember that each child is unique and may not always adhere to these developmental milestones. A number of congenital (present at birth) factors can cause speech delay. Hearing loss, mental retardation, morphological abnormalities, cognitive deficiencies, genetic variations, neurologic disability, and physiologic abnormalities are just a few of the possibilities. During otherwise normal development, especially multilingual development, children may experience an early period of silence. When each language is considered separately, we see a decrease in vocabulary in later days. Some regard this as a lag, but when both languages are considered together, they equal a larger vocabulary, which we refer to as conceptual vocabulary. If there is a delay, however, do not ignore it and have your child tested by a specialist at our clinic.
